The dull side is the actual vinyl.

It is the adhesive side but only sticks with heat.
On the other hand if easyweed is not pressed long enough or at too low of heat it will also not.
Now if you are going to hand wash your mugs you can probably use either adhesive vinyl or heat transfer vinyl and any of the application methods mentioned.
Sometimes this can cause issues with heat transfer vinyl sticking.
I will say my favorite application method for the heat transfer vinyl on a mug was the mini iron.
Now there is also the easypress mini that will work great for projects like these.

You create a decal but only some of the letters stick onto the transfer tape while the rest are left behind on the backing paper.
Htv or heat transfer vinyl is not intended to be used on ceramic glass mugs or any type of substrate other than something that will allow the htv to melt into it.
If you need shirts that won t shrink purchase preshrunk shirts to prevent it.
This is the side we want to cut on make sure to always place the shiny side down onto your cutting mat.
